Segway Max G3 Preview – Analyzing & Comparing Early Data

At CES 2025 Segway showcased its 3rd generation line-up of electric scooters set to launch later this year. Among them we find the successor to the most sold electric scooter in the world, the Segway Max G3.

This third Generation model in the Max series, is set to launch early Q2 and it comes packed with a lot more power and many new features, one being the return of the long awaited add-on battery pack. Something we haven’t seen on a Segway Scooter model since back when they launched their first ES serie, the ES3(ES4).

What We Know About The Segway Max G3 So Far

The Max has seen great improvements with every new generation, and the G3 is no less a big step up, just like the G2 was to its predecessor the G30. There is a reason the Segway Max is the #1 most sold electric scooter series across the globe. Famous for providing great performance and quality at an affordable price that caters to a wide range of riders. As of writing the Max G3 is only available for pre-order. We will therefore be relying on early testing and official data released by Segway for our in-depth analysis.

Note: The US version of the Max Scooter is named G3. It differs slightly from the European version G3D, mainly due to different laws and regulations in the region. Most notable difference is that the European model has a lower motor power(W) and top speed.

Motor And Battery Analysis

The standard G30 came with a 36V system, loaded with 551Wh of battery power and a 350W motor that has a peak wattage of up to around 750W. This resulted in an at that pretty standard 18.6 mph top speed. The following generation, Max G2, had similar system and battery spec’s but with a 450W motor that could peak up to 1000W. Providing the G2 with a great top speed landing at 22 mph.

For the Max G3, Segway has not held back and upped its performance even further. The G3 comes with a 48v system with a 10% larger battery capacity (597Wh), paired with a 800W motor that peaks at 2000W. This gives the G3 not only a very impressive 28 mph top speed, far more power to tackle hills up to 30%, but it is also said to accelerate from 0-15 mph in 2.4 seconds. However, it does say that this is while using the Segway boost feature. Something we’ve tested on the new GT3. I am not a big fan of how it originally worked since I want constant power, and quite frankly I feel that the boost is a bit annoying to turn on.

In terms of range, the marketed numbers are always achieved under optimal conditions, and tend to be slightly unrealistic at best. But in order to gauge a best estimate of its range capabilities we dug into our database with data from more than 28 tested Segway models. Its closest relative the Max G2 gave us 27.8 miles of range during testing. This test has hills, stop signals, and are performed in the highest speed mode. That is 44% less range than the advertised maximum achievable range of 43.5 miles, a number we all know has been acquired under optimal conditions in ECO mode.
The G3 is marketed with a 46.6 mile range, if there is any correlation here, that would mean that under our real-life testing we could expect at least a 30.7 miles of range. This is without taking into account any optimizations to energy usage Segway may have implemented into the G3. A very good number for a scooter of this caliber.

Should you wish for more range, you can opt for a extra 460Wh battery pack. That’s right, since the launch of Segway’s first electric scooter series, the ES1 through 4, we haven’t seen an external add-on battery on any of their models. The new pack connects securely to the bottom of the scooters stem. A connection that otherwise can be used to dual charge the scooter, cutting its original charge time of 3.5h down to 2.5h.

Build Structure And Parts Analysis

One of the main reasons for the unprecedented success we’ve seen with Segway’s Max series is not only for its great performance, but also due to its incredible build quality and well thought through design. It is one of the more feature-rich and well-designed scooters on the market within its price range, backed by a household name that holds a long history in personal electric vehicles. The G3 is no different, they’ve improved upon an already good riding experience, added more features, enhanced already existing ones, and redesigned it completely. Design-wise, I am not a huge fan as I believe it looks a bit bulky and lacks its original sleek design, but in terms of stability and ride experience it should be a big bump upwards.

Suspension

Suspension close up of the Max G3

The new Max G3 has both a rear and front adjustable hydraulic suspension, it is a clear upgrade from the already good suspension system on the G2. Combined with the new larger 11” inch tires I am hoping we get a little more travel on these suspensions for an even softer handling of bumps.

SegRide Stability Enhancement

All their new generation scooters come with something new that Segway calls SegRide. It may sound like some futuristic technology used to increase the stability and handling of the scooter, but it isn’t. It does give the scooter a much more stable handling, but it is pretty much an unnecessary marketing ploy for adjusting the angle of the stem as well as moving the wheel off-axis. This makes the scooters front tire handle speeds much better by utilizing the good ol’ shopping cart technology. With the wheel off axis it will automatically stabilize itself when riding, which also lessens the risk of wobbling, something I think all scooters should embrace. I just don’t see the need for having a special name for it, as it’s no new ground breaking technology, just very basic geometry.

Handlebar Design

Curved new handlebar seen from above on the Max G3

To increase the comfort and instill more ride confidence they’ve opted for a curved handlebar, like the ones you find on almost all bikes. Truth be told I have no idea why it has taken them so long to do this, but it is a great improvement to handling.

Secure Locking

If you look at the front, you can see an arch going across from one side of the handlebar to the other. At first I was quite sure this was a handle, so that when the scooter is fully folded you could pull it using the handle. Now I know its purpose is to be able to securely lock your scooter. It might still double as a pulley handle, but that is merely me guessing at this point.

Lighting Upgrades

Another important upgrade is that the scooter is now underlit, and it doubles as a turn signal. Night time riding, my main concern is others not seeing me, not the other way around. This makes the rider a lot more visible to its surroundings at night, a great safety enhancing feature. For lighting they’ve also given the scooter a (stated by Segway) 3 times more efficient headlight.

We do not have any lumen numbers to really go into the nitty gritty and understand exactly how bright we can expect this to be, but it should be much better than its predecessor. On top of this upgrade they’ve also given it a smart automatic function so that it turns on depending on your surroundings, and it is height adjustable so that you can set it to your liking.

Water Protection Improvements

The scooter has an IPX6 rating for water resistance, but if we’ve learnt anything from the G2, it’s that when Segway says IPX6 it is basically impenetrable. The battery upholds IPX7 which means you can pretty much submerge the entire thing into water for a while. This means that it will continue to hold on to that top spot as the best electric scooters for riding in the rain.

When Can You Get Your Hands On The Max G3

The Segway Max G3 has yet to set an official delivery date, but they have stated that it should become available in early Q2 of 2025. Middle of Q1 2025 we have seen a few selected retailers in Europe opening it up for pre-orders and just recently Segway has officially announced set a date for their pre-sale to go live.

You can pre-order the Max G3 here starting 03/06/25 12 AM PST.

As for when you can expect to get your scooter delivered, no official delivery date has been announced.

Max G3 Price Analysis

In terms of price, we did see some pricing on a few European sites and the MSRP there for the pre-orders was €899. This translates to about $950, so we can with some assurance say that we expect the price to land somewhere around $1,000.

Our Expectations For The New Generation 3 Model

From early access riding to analyzing every source of information available so far, it looks like the G3 is going to be quite the upgrade for the Max series. I think the higher top speed is less important than the increase in sheer power to tackle much steeper inclines to the everyday commuter.

It has a slightly higher weight, which to me seems strange as it was advertised to be lighter. However, taking into account all the new upgrades to both power and handling it is quite the achievement they’ve been able to keep the weight consistent.

I am quite confident the Max G3 is going to be a huge success, with its specifications and expected price it will cater to a wide range of riders.
